CTD offers a series of Site Safety Plus courses which are aimed at all levels of the workforce. They are designed to raise awareness and improve the management of health and safety on construction sites. These courses also fulfil an employer’s duty to provide ‘appropriate training and knowledge of Health and Safety at Work’, as prescribed under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
Health and Safety Awareness
Who is this course for?
This one day course is aimed at construction site workers, to help them to understand the potential hazards that they may face on site. It provides a practical summary of health, safety, welfare and environmental issues. It identifies the delegate’s responsibilities for looking after themselves and others, outlines the employer’s duties and explains what should be done if the worker thinks that anyone’s health and safety is being put at risk.
It is one route to obtaining the CSCS Labourers card. You will also need to have passed the Health Safety & Environment test within the last two years.
Course content includes:
- Employee and employer legal responsibilities
- Health and Welfare including PPE, first aid, emergency procedures
- General safety including work equipment, safety signs
- High Risk activities including working at height, vehicles and plant
- Environmental awareness and waste control
Assessment:
- This is by a multiple choice question paper at the end of the course.

Site Managers Safety Training Scheme
Who is the course for?
This five day course is designed for Site Managers & agents who are responsible for planning, organising, monitoring, controlling and administering groups of staff on a construction site. It covers all relevant legislation and other aspects which affect safe working in the building, construction and civil engineering industries.
It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures, and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture among the workforce.
The SMSTS course is endorsed by Build UK as the standard training for all construction managers.
Course content includes:
- Legal and Management responsibilities including health and safety law, CDM regulations and risk assessment, inductions, method statement and accident prevention, control and reporting.
- Health and Welfare including stress and mental health at work, dust and fumes and COSHH.
- General safety including fire prevention and control, lifting equipment, accessories and mobile plant and vehicles.
- High Risk activities including working at height regulations, excavations and substances hazardous to health.
- Environmental awareness including waste management and contaminated land.
Assessment involves several different elements:
- The candidate must attend and participate in the full course.
- The candidate must complete four core exercises
- There will be an individual trainer review.
- At the end of the course there is a written exam paper.
The candidate must achieve a pass in all of these elements to be successful.

Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme
Who is the course for?
This two day course is designed for those who have or are about to acquire supervisory responsibilities. It covers all relevant legislation and other aspects which affect safe working in the building, construction and civil engineering industries. Highlighting the need for risk assessment, effective control measures and communication skills to ensure the site remains safe for everyone.
Course content includes:
- Legal and Management responsibilities including health and safety law, risk assessments, method statements and permits to work. Plus induction and training.
- Health and Welfare including first aid and emergency procedures and PPE.
- General safety including site organisation, work equipment and hand held tools and temporary works.
- High Risk activities including underground and overhead services, confined spaces and working at height regulations.
- Environmental awareness including waste management.
Assessment involves several different elements:
- The candidate must attend and participate in the full course.
- The candidate must complete two core exercises
- There will be an individual trainer review.
- At the end of the course there is a written exam paper.
The candidate must achieve a pass in all of these elements to be successful.

SMSTS & SSSTS Refresher Courses
Refresher courses are available for candidates with an existing SMSTS or SSSTS certificate. Certificates must be in-date to be eligible to undertake a refresher course.
Both refresher courses are classroom-based, 2 days for the SMSTS and 1 day for the SSSTS. New certificates are issued with a 5-year expiry from the date of the refresher course.
