Course Overview


This ½ day course is intended for people who may mount abrasive wheels in the course of their normal duties and require and appreciation of abrasive wheel safety and sound mounting techniques.


By the end of the course, candidates will:

  • have a sound knowledge of legal requirements for use of abrasive wheels
  • be able to identify different types of abrasive wheels
  • be able to mount and use abrasive wheels in the safest manner possible
  • understand the different uses of abrasive wheels
  • be able to identify the correct running speed of an abrasive wheel
  • have an understanding of the dangers of respirable crystal line silica, noise and vibration


By the end of the course, candidates will be able to:

  • use dust suppresion equipment
  • protect operators in the event of a wheel “bursting”
  • prevent operators from coming into contact with a moving abrasive wheel
  • know the correct Personal Protective Equipment to wear and the importance of always wearing it when required
  • control the work area conditions where wheels are used
  • prevent overspeeding
  • to identify and use the correct PPE for the task


The course satisfies the requirement of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWR 98), Safety in the Use of Abrasive Wheels HSG17
